when i was a baby, my mom wrote a journal to me and just recently gave it to me. being as i can't remember a period in my life where i didn't keep a journal, i figgered it'd be an awesome thing to give my son, joey. so his father and i have put together a little blog for him, Baby Joey, with the hopes of giving it to him to read one day. check it out and keep up on joey's progress!

it's a boy! joseph freeman simmonds it is. we were both very excited, hoping for a boy (though we would have loved a little emily just as much). visions of teeny tiny chuck taylors were dancing in our heads!


in other news, john has been playing drums with the nasty bastards band at bad boys beach bar, and last week when we were there, we met this guy who's friend just got released that day from mexican prison on marijuana possession charges. they were all celebrating his release. i learned a few things about mexican prison that amaze me. first, the guy paid $500/month to rent out a suite within the prison and had the superior beer company deliver beer to his door. he ordered so much, they gave him a free fridge. second, up until a couple of years ago, you could move your entire family into the prison with you, as well as open a legitimate business with a store front in the yard. THIRD, after you're arrested, you have to stay in prison until you're sentenced, no bail. this, like the US, takes a long time. the guy who had ben released last week, was in prison for a year awaiting sentencing. when he was finally sentenced to 5 years, he was given the option of doing the time or paying $3000. his friends pooled together the money and he got out of a 5 year sentence. also, they don't give out death or life sentences. it's a different world, this mexico.

the way this guy got caught with enough marijuana to get him 5 years? he caught some guy trying to steal the shit from him when he came home one night, grabbed a machete and chased him around the block a couple times with it. eventually the police were called and they checked out his house and found some weed. haha. the whole scene plays out like something hunter s. thompson would have written about.
