the revolution will not be silk-screened

at the library square pub last night, the hockey game was on 8 screens, vancouver versus columbus, ohio - i know who else was watching to catch glimpses of my beautiful city. now i can start my next letter with "haHA" cause we whupped 'em 5-3

the library square pub... after the game, they removed a couple tables to create a dance floor and brought out a dj, in a pub. a pub. and i looked around, sadly, at my fellow canuck fans, vancouverites, human beings and i just wanted to tell them all "relax, just be yourself" because they all stood there, awkwardly with their pints and mouthed the words to the song while glancing at each other to see if anyone was watching them so knowledgably lip sync. the odd shuffle, the odd giggle, lots of prada. needless to say, i felt it necessary to remove myself from the situation and head back to the gritty, dirty pioneer pub to see mike, lacroy and the regular pi-goers for a drink. the pioneer soon emptied for karaoke at bb's and my boyfriend and i headed to my place with movies and beer and curled up with my doggy under the wilma blanket and watched chris rock and adam sandler play football in the yard of a texas correctional institution.

a weird thing happened while i was watching 'the longest yard'. there's a scene where the inmates' field gets flooded and they play football in it anyway and there's this slow-mo musical interlude and i'm struck with clarity, all of a sudden thinking in my head "fuck, this is real for mike". i'm not sure how else to describe it. he recently broke his finger playing football in the yard, and he's not normally one to like sports at all, but he tells me it's all there is to do and here are these fictional inmates faced with either playing in a muddy unsafe field or not playing at all, and of course they choose to play, cause that's all there is, like mike said, except it's real for him. an odd movie to trigger such a moment of clarity, but i shed a tear or two during the mud scene of 'the longest yard'.

*clears throat* nelly's kind of sexy.

check out these shirts

since i love arguing, i will argue with these garments...

1. commies are cool. well, some of them. hey, that's not too unlike capitalists!

2. che guevara had done so much more in his life than just sidekick castro during the cuban revolution. he was an incredibly compassionate man, and doctor and his only wish in life was to help the little guys defeat their opressive governments. i highly suggest reading this book. one day it will make a great slapstick comedy flick, oddly enough. and obviously, see the motorcycle diaries.

3. guns. reagan. i'm sorry if any of you are so desperately primitive that you think either of these is a good thing. and i'm sorry your parents had to give birth to such demon children. i'm concentrating on sending positive energy through this pants post in hopes that one day your family is healed. you know, before one of you accidentally shoots another.

4. communism killed 100 million people? or did a misunderstanding of communism? and western paranoia? and how many people has capitalism killed? watch waiting for fidel - one of the best documentaries re: cuba i've seen to date (and that's saying a lot, 'cause up here we have cuba weekend on the documentary channel every 6 months or so), then tell me communism kills. and i wonder how many tiny children were hurt, killed, overworked or starved to stitch together that very t-shirt?

5. i'd far rather be a victim than create a victim. fuck your guns.

6. i have been called a hippie on many occassions. i smell fucking awesome. fruits and blossoms and vanilla. sometimes i turn myself on, i smell so fucking good.

7. hillary clinton is a commie? hahahahahahahahahahaha... oh shit, propel vitamin water by gatorade, lemon flavor just shot out my nose. hey, maybe that's why they call it propel.

8. i'm still not clear on this whole screw the french thing. is it just because they didn't aid and abet the murderous rampage in iraq? 'cause canada didn't either - why don't you eff canada? or any other 'progressive', western country with the exception of the aussies and british? why only the french? it just makes no bloody sense.

9. ann coulter is by far the most frightening thing to ever occur since hitler. i am absolutely chilled to the spine by the abhorrent things that come from that hellion's mouth.

and now our daily installment of anti-death penalty sentiments:

Execution of gang founder could spark prison unrest

just to make this clear...

1. the man to be executed has been nominated 4 times for a nobel peace prize as a result of his anti-gang activism and the anti-gang books he's written for children. he has changed the lives of many people for the better.

2. the loss of this man's life will have a profound negative affect on children and teenagers who were affected and could be affected in the future by his work.

3. this man's execution will most likely cause utter chaos in prisons all over the united states of america. inmates and officers alike are at risk. there will be more loss of life than just the two murder victims and tookie.

so, this execution is good and should go ahead as planned because...?? has anyone got even the slightest idea why this might be something that needs to happen? cause i'm at a fucking loss.

this will create a vicious cycle, a cycle that is created by every execution and it will never stop, innocent people will never stop dying as a result of murder, execution or prison riots, it will never stop until you do something.

something that often bothers me, is how fucking disgusting it is when i sit here, with the rest of the world, watching your country, unable to vote, unable to persuade senators and governers and sign petitions, etc. i sit here and watch atrocity after atrocity occur in the name of the stars and stripes and wish more than anything that my voice would change the way your government works. and then i see election time roll around and i see so many of you throw your chance away at something that i, and so much of the world, so desperately want: a say in how much longer bush and rice and cheney terrorize our planet.

i think those of you who chose not to exercise your right to vote as a citizen of a democratic country, are far worse than any bush. the amount of blood on your hands... you're ruining your country. democracy doesn't work unless the people take part, hence it's definition: a gov't for the people, by the people.

by the people. the PEOPLE. YOU. not big tobacco, not general motors, not pfizer and aol time warner. YOU.
